Hallowed ground for anyone interested in cinema, the Institut Lumière is on the site of the birth of European cinema. It was here in their phtographic factory that Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the elegant cinématographe, movie camera and projector all in one, and shot their first film, shown on the program of the first paid public showing of cinema in the Grand Café in Paris in December, 1895. We will visit the museum, located in the gorgreous family villa, and take in a screening in the Institut's theatre, located in what was once the famous Lumière factory. Other attractions in Lyon include the
Nicéphore Niépce Museum (pioneer in photography), the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the Old Town dating from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Museum of the Resistance, and sites in connection with the silk industry established in the 1500s. Staying overnight, we may find time to take a boat cruise along the Rhone and Saône to see picturesque Lyon from another perspective. You may also join Trish on a hunt for something to eat featuring the region's white truffles.
